Although its population is primarily ethnic Chinese, Macau, because it was a Portuguese territory for so long, has a distinctly Mediterranean flavor. A languorous pace, balconied pastel buildings and open squares.

The most famous landmark is the Church of Sao Paulo. All that remains is the facade, the rest of the church was destroyed by fire in 1835, but it's worth climbing an imposing set of stairs to view the ruins up close, especially at night when you can see the lights of the city below.

A-Ma, or Tien Hau as she is more generally known, is a Taoist goddess much revered in Macau - she is the Queen of Heaven and Patron of Seafarers. To the people of Macau, whose history is deeply linked with the sea, her festival is one of the most important of the year.

The history of the goddess of the sea goes back to around 1044 AD when in Fukien province, about 350 miles north of Macau, the wife of a poor fisherman named Lin, gave birth to a baby girl. At the time of the birth ared glow was seen over the house and the baby grew to be the most remarkable child - she never cried, worked hard and was obedient and devout.

One day the girl was sleeping and dreamed that two junks carrying her father and brothers were caught in a storm - she stretched out her arms and clenched the masts of the vessels in her fists. Her mother was alarmed and, fearing that the child was suffering a fit, shook her by the arm to wake her, causing her, in her dream, to let go of one of the boats. Later, when her brothers returned, they told the story that at the height of a terrible storm the vision of a beautiful girl had reached out to save them but was unable to hold onto their fathers boat and thus he had perished.
