Heroin smuggled in from Iran seized at Johannesburg airport

South African police have seized a large quantity of heroin which they say was smuggled into the country from Iran.

The discovery was made when packages containing spare parts were found to be destined for a fake address.

When the packages were opened they were found to contain 24kg of heroin, with a street value of 12,000,000 South African Rand ($1.5 million).

Police uncovered the smuggling operation on Friday at OR Tamba International Airport, the busiest airport in the country. The airport services Johannesburg, and was previously known as the Johannesburg International Airport.

Authorities said Saturday they had not encountered heroin smuggling from Iran previously and considered the attempt highly unusual.

Police are investigating the matter and are yet to lay charges.
