MACAO, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Macao's total merchandise import grew by 28.5 percent year on year to 10.69 billion patacas in January 2021, the special administrative region's statistical service said on Thursday.
The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed that the imports of mobile phones, handbags and wallets and watches surged by 205.1 percent, 65.9 percent and 45.2 percent respectively, but those of perfumes, articles for casino and fuels and lubricants declined by 53.7 percent, 43.5 percent and 31.5 percent respectively.
External merchandise trade totaled 12.12 billion patacas in January 2021, up by 28.5 percent from a year earlier. Merchandise trade deficit in January totaled 9.27 billion patacas, according to the report.
Analyzed by place of origin, imports from the mainland and the European Union (EU) increased by 46.0 percent and 28.8 percent year on year to 3.95 billion patacas and 3.39 billion patacas respectively in January 2021.
Besides, imports from the Belt and Road countries rose by 13.0 percent to 2.06 billion patacas, while imports from Portuguese-speaking countries reduced by 9.5 percent to 62 million patacas. (1 pataca equals to 0.1252 U.S. dollar)
