TOKYO -- Japan on Wednesday declared a COVID-19 quasi-state of emergency for Tokyo, neighboring Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa and 9 other prefectures, as the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been spreading rapidly in these areas.

Under the quasi-state of emergency, restaurants and bars will be asked to close early and stop or limit the serving of alcohol.

The measures will take effect from Friday to Feb. 13, lasting for around three weeks. (Japan-COVID-19-State of Emergency-URGENT)

MACAO -- Restaurants and retail businesses in Macao grew in November 2021 as compared to the previous month, the special administrative region's statistics service said on Wednesday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that 27 percent of the interviewed restaurants and similar establishments reported a year-on-year rise in revenue, a growth of 15 percentage points from October 2021. (Macao-Restaurant & Retail Businesses)

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- The construction work for a water diversion dam has been launched in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar, the local government said on Wednesday.

With a total cost of 14 million afghanis (about 136,000 U.S. dollars), the Mianko Water Dam on the outskirts of provincial capital Kandahar city will help irrigate agricultural lands and gardens and control the flow of seasonal floods to Kandahar and neighboring villages, the government said in a statement. NEW DELHI -- Commercial international flights to and from India will remain suspended until Feb. 28 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian aviation authorities said on Wednesday.

According to a circular issued by the country's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the restriction will not be applicable for international all-cargo operations and flights specifically approved by the DGCA. (India-COVID-19-Flights Suspension)
