MACAO, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The total spending of visitors to Macao excluding gaming expenses rose by 6.7 percent year on year to 6.59 billion patacas (815.8 million U.S. dollars) in the first quarter of 2022, the special administrative region's (SAR) statistic department said on Thursday.
The latest report from Macao's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) said that the growth was driven by an increase in visitor arrivals.
Total spending of same-day visitors leapt by 114.5 percent year on year to 1.26 billion patacas while that of overnight visitors dropped by 4.7 percent to 5.33 billion patacas, showed the report.
Per-capita spending of visitors in the first quarter went down by 1.2 percent year on year to 3,514 patacas, mainly due to the growth in the number of same-day visitors with relatively low spending.
Visitors spent primarily on shopping, food and beverage and accommodation in the first quarter. Per-capita shopping spending of visitors grew by 8.1 percent year on year to 2,464 patacas, which was mainly spent on cosmetics and perfume, handbags and shoes, and food products.
