LISBON, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has referred the recently approved amendments to the Foreigners Law to the Constitutional Court, requesting a ruling within 15 days.
In a statement on the Presidency's website on Thursday, Marcelo expressed concerns over "conceptual vagueness" in the legislation that could hinder its implementation.
The president also criticized the legislative process for being rushed, noting that the bill was processed in just 16 working days without proper consultations or hearings.
Some advisory bodies, such as the Superior Council of Administrative and Tax Courts, criticized the extremely short deadlines for issuing opinions.
The Constitutional Court judges will examine whether the law complies with the constitution during the current judicial recess.
According to local media, the amendments to the Foreigners Law seek to tighten immigration controls, particularly in relation to family reunification rights.
